For Checo, Suzuka was a race to forget. After a mediocre qualifying, he had to start P5 and immediately made contact with Hamilton and Sainz at the start, significantly damaging his front wing in the process. He was called into the pits to fix the damage while the race was under a yellow flag, but when exiting the pits, he tried to overtake Alonso and got slapped with a 5 second penalty for the manoeuvre. After a few more laps, he had to pit again, this time putting himself squarely at the back of the pack and giving himself a monumental recovery drive task ahead. However, it was not to be, as he locked up and collided with Kevin Magnussen on a hairpin turn, spinning the Haas and causing even more damage to his own car. By lap 13 he was done (well, we won't get into the second 5 second penalty) while his teammate went on to win the race and secure the Constructors’ Championship for Red Bull.
