It seems that that Australian season opener might have used up all the yellow flags allotted for March. There were no incidents at the Shanghai circuit this year and the race became a game of longevity and tire management in the unseasonal spring heat. Throughout the race, McLaren looked comfortably in control and Oscar Piastri earned his first win of the season. In the closing laps, Lando’s hold on second place seemed to be slipping away as his brakes slowly failed. During the last lap, he was losing seconds per segment to third-place runner George Russell.
In this painting I wanted to highlight the fan-shaped shade structures along one of the main straights and to use them to obscure most of the painting, as I feel that most of the big story of this race happened after it had finished (three disqualifications - two of them belonging to Ferrari). The papaya shapes represent the two McLarens, with the second seeming to lose its form and morph into something off balance. I’ve also painted an abstracted brake cylinder to represent what was happening to Lando’s car in the closing stages as the pointed triangle lines representing Russell’s Mercedes get surprisingly close to overtaking him.
